| Los Angeles is a strange sort
of big city. There are a number of skyscrapers in the core
business area however for a metro of 18 million people, it's
skyline pales compared to that of cities which are similar
in size. The building restrictions due to earthquake fears
are a part of the issue, but urban sprawl is at the heart of
the matter. This is a city build for cars with around 30
major freeways running through the city. The old height
limitations was to keep Los Angeles more "low-rise" and open
to ensure more sunlight and fewer shadows on the streets.
Nonetheless, for LA not being known for having a great
skyline, it actually has a pretty impressive one. It sports
10 buildings over 200 m, none of which were build after
1991. |
